Sustainability at the Heart of Torbay Rum: A Commitment to the Environment and Local Heritage
At Torbay Rum, we want to make a difference. Not just through the quality of our rum, but by how we make it and the materials we use along the way. Situated on the beautiful South Devon coast, sustainability is something that feels deeply personal to us. Our connection to the land and sea is integral to everything we do, and that’s why we take great care in ensuring our practices reflect our values. In this post, we’ll share a bit more about our approach to sustainability and how it shapes our rum, as well as some of our plans moving forward.
Why Sustainability Matters to Us
Living and working by the coast, we’re constantly reminded of how fragile the environment is. The stunning scenery that defines Torbay is something we want to protect, not just for us, but for future generations to enjoy. Sustainability isn’t a passing trend for Torbay Rum; it’s simply the right thing to do. From our eco-friendly packaging to our plans for partnerships, we’re mindful of our impact every step of the way.
The Cane Fibre Label: An Eco-Friendly Option
One of the ways we’ve chosen to make a difference is with our labels. We use cane fibre labels, made from bagasse—the leftover fibre after sugarcane juice is extracted. This material is biodegradable and compostable, making it a far more sustainable option than traditional paper labels. It’s also an effective way to reduce waste and support a circular economy, which we’re proud to be part of.
Cane fibre labels also offer a more natural, organic feel to our bottles, which perfectly mirrors the authenticity of the rum inside. The subtly textured and slightly rustic look reflects the care and craftsmanship that go into making Torbay Rum, while also helping us reduce our environmental footprint. It’s a simple step, but one that makes a noticeable difference.

Our Seal of Approval
When it comes to sealing our bottles, we chose British Wax’s natural, sustainable wax. Their wax is ethically sourced and 100% natural, which aligns with our commitment to using materials that are kinder to the planet. British Wax takes great pride in their sourcing practices, ensuring every product is produced in a way that respects both people and the environment.
Choosing British Wax means we’re reducing our reliance on petroleum-based products and supporting a company that’s dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint. By sealing each bottle of Torbay Rum with their natural wax, we’re adding a thoughtful touch that reflects our sustainability efforts, all while making sure the wax is as high-quality as the rum itself.

Looking Ahead
Sustainability is something we don’t take lightly at Torbay Rum. Whether it’s the choice of cane fibre labels or the use of natural wax, we’re committed to making decisions that are good for the planet, good for the community, and, of course, good for the rum. As we grow, we’ll continue to make sustainability a core part of everything we do, ensuring that our rum doesn’t just taste great but also stands for something that matters.
In fact, we have partnerships lined up for 2025 that give us the opportunity to do our part in preserving and bringing attention to The English Riviera. More on that to come soon!
Here’s to a future where we can enjoy great rum and do our bit to protect the world around us.
